Discover the Story of the Yoga Warrior Poses

In yoga, we often practice warrior poses. Have you ever wondered why a peaceful practice like yoga would include "warrior" poses?

As with everything in yoga, there is a lot of hidden meaning behind the names of poses. It's often tied to ancient Hindu teachings.

The warrior poses are called Virabhadrasana poses in Sanskrit, the ancient language of Hinduism. They're named after a powerful warrior in Hindu mythology, Virabhadra. According to this ancient myth, Lord Shiva created Virabhadra to avenge the death of his wife. I spare you the whole story, but it's like a modern-day soap opera filled with love, grief, and revenge.

In Warrior 1 pose, the warrior Virabhadra rises from the dirt and holds the sword over his head in both hands. In Warrior 2 pose, he steadies himself to prepare for the strike. In Warrior 3 pose, he lunges forward and beheads the enemy with the sword.

When we practice the warrior poses, we connect to the warrior within. We are reminded of our strength, determination, and confidence.

By staying focused throughout the yoga practice and hanging in there when it gets intense, we come to know our own strength and humility that get us through challenges ... on the yoga mat and in life.

How can we be warriors in our own lives? How can we show up strong, determined, and confident? How can we use our strengths to create a better world?

And you thought warrior poses were just meant to build up strength in your legs, improve your balance, and as a way for me to torture you in class? 🤣

I hope you enjoyed this little exploration into Hindu mythology.

Best,
Christine
