Hi, do you like the heat of summer? 🔥

Whether you like it or not, get ready for it! Summer officially started this Tuesday (June 21st).

Luckily, you have your breath to help you cool down. Are you wondering how?

Discover the "Cooling Breath" (Sheetali)

Let me introduce you to Yoga's "Cooling Breath" (called Sheetali in Sanskrit; sheet in Sanskrit means "cold" or "frigid"). The Sheetali breath is said to cool the body, the mind, and the emotions.

This Sheetali breath is also said to be good for people suffering from high blood pressure, improve digestion, and help control hunger and thirst. I don't think those benefits are scientifically proven, so try it and see what it does for you.

At a minimum, it's a great breath technique to use during hot weather, prolonged exposure to direct sun, and when you have hot flashes 😉.

Sheetali requires the ability to roll your tongue by curling the lateral edges upward to form a tube. Did you know that only 7 in 10 people can roll their tongues? So if you have that ability, join me for the Sheetali breath.

How to perform the cooling Sheetali breath:

  1. Stick your tongue out and curl the sides of your tongue together so it looks like a hot dog roll.
  2. Inhale through your curled tongue as if you were breathing through a straw.
  3. At the top of the inhale, draw your tongue in, close your mouth, and hold your breath for a second or two.
  4. Then slowly exhale through your nose.
  5. This represents one round of cooling breath. Continue for 7-10 rounds.

Stay cool and enjoy your summer!

Best,

Christine
