Learn how to squat again as an adult to stay mobile

If you've spent time with a baby recently, you might have noticed her/him squatting a lot.

If you have been to India and other Asian countries, you might have seen adults squatting rather than sitting in chairs.

Why?

Our bodies are built for squatting. The primal squat is a fundamental human movement. Just think about elimination and childbirth.

Yet many of us in the West forgot how to squat as we became adults. The good news is, if practiced daily, most people can relearn to squat pretty quickly.

Why is squatting so beneficial?

Squatting is a very powerful pose to improve balance, mobility, and flexibility. Squatting can also help with digestion, reduce back pain, and improve posture because it helps lengthen hip flexors which tend to shorten when we sit all day long.

When you squat, you work parts of your body that are often neglected when you sit ... and don't we all spend way too much time sitting?

Squatting strengthens the muscles in your legs, glutes, and core by contracting them to support your weight while holding the position. You also work your ankles and feet as they help keep you steady.

We'll all suffer from a reduced range of motion as we age if we don't work on it.

So it's important we work on keeping that mobility. Squatting is a great way to do that. By including squatting in your daily life, you can stay more mobile and avoid some of the common ailments that come from sitting too much throughout the day.

If getting down into a primal squat doesn't come easily to you, don't worry!

You probably haven't done it in a very long time, so it might take some progressive squat versions to get your body mobile enough for the primal squat. And even if you never progress all the way down to the primal squat, the less-deep variations will be beneficial to you, too.
