Fall Equinox | How to Transition Gracefully Into the Fall Season

This upcoming Wednesday will be the fall equinox, the official beginning of fall. Equal daylight and night mean that the earth is in perfect balance.
At this time of the year, when the earth is approaching perfect balance, how can we personally try to bring more balance into our lives? Ask yourself what you could change to create more balance in your life.
Practice letting go of what was and prepare for what might be—a fall & winter of more skillful presence; of being more mindful; of taking small breaks to check in with yourself to see what your body & mind need in this very moment.
Pay more attention to finding that "middle road" between effort and ease, strength and softness, and work and play.
I have set myself the goal to spend this season with more ease and joyfulness. What do you want your fall season to feel like?
Since this season often feels very busy, it's even more crucial to make space in our schedules to slow down and be present in the moment.
Take some time to meditate. Meditation doesn't need to happen sitting still on a cushion.
Probably the simplest meditative practice that you can do during this season is to stare at a tree. Watch the leaves fall. Watch the squirrels collect nuts for winter. Watch the changing colors of the leaves from week to week.
It may sound silly, but giving yourself 5 minutes outside to observe the changes that are occurring in that tree and to open your senses to your surroundings can provide much-needed space in this busy season. It might even nourish your soul.
Finally, as we move into fall, our bodies' nutritional needs change. According to Ayurveda, as fall approaches, our bodies are no longer satisfied with lighter salads and fruits, the foods of summer. Our bodies start to crave (and benefit from) warmer foods like cooked veggies, stews, and soups. My body usually craves warm cider donuts and hot apple cider in the fall 😉. What comfort foods does your body crave as the days grow shorter?
If you're not familiar with Ayurveda, it's a natural science of medicine created around the same time as yoga (about 3,000 years ago).
It's based on the idea that disease is often caused or worsened by an imbalance or stress in a person's life. Ayurveda encourages certain lifestyle interventions and natural therapies to regain a balance between the body, mind, spirit, and the environment. If you want to learn more about Ayurveda, I would recommend as a starter the book "Ayurveda: The Science of Self Healing" by Vasant Lad.

Wishing you a wonderful beginning of fall. Do you have any fall rituals you look forward to each year that you would be willing to share with me?
Best,
