How to Beat Jet Lag

I love to travel to far destinations, and with the pandemic mostly behind us, it's time to travel again!

But let's be real: that time shift can be a total downer, making you feel like a zombie when you arrive. Your internal clock is all mixed up, leaving you feeling groggy, disoriented, and just plain icky.

Don't worry, I've got your back.

With a few simple tricks and some tech help, you can conquer that jet lag and feel like a pro in no time!

First things first, let's talk about what's actually happening to your body when we cross time zones.

Your body has a built-in clock, also known as the circadian rhythm, that regulates your sleep patterns, hormone levels, and all kinds of other important stuff. When you travel, that rhythm gets all mixed up, leaving you feeling like you're stuck in a never-ending cycle of yawns.

So, what's the solution? Sunlight, my friend!

If you arrive during the daytime, go outside as soon as you land and don't wear sunglasses to soak up the sunlight. If it's a cloudy day, you can stay inside and turn on all the lights. Try to find cool-looking white light. If you arrive at night, go straight to bed. These actions will help reset your body's internal clock and get you back on track.

But wait, there's more! Technology is here to help you, too.

Have you heard of the Timeshifter app?

This app (and others like it) uses science-backed strategies to help you quickly adjust to your new time zone. Simply input your travel information and voila! You'll have a personalized plan to beat jet lag. It's like having a personal assistant, but even better - it's a personal jet lag assistant!

And here are a few more tips to make that transition a smooth one:

  1. Stay hydrated: Dehydration is the enemy of jet lag, so make sure to drink plenty of water before, during, and after your flight.
  2. Say no to alcohol: Alcohol can mess with your sleep patterns, making it harder for you to adjust to a new time zone. Try to limit your consumption, especially in the evenings.
  3. Get moving: After a long flight, your body might feel stiff and sluggish. Try going for a walk or doing a light workout such as yoga or stretching. Getting physical will boost your energy levels and help you feel more awake and refreshed.

If your body is feeling as stiff as a board after a long flight, be sure to check out my 10-minute video with simple yet effective stretches that will have you feeling better in no time.

There you have it! With a little bit of preparation and the right tools, you can beat jet lag and fully enjoy your trip.

So pack your bags, make sure your cat isn't hiding inside your bag when you close it (my cat Ms. Ringtail loves sitting inside my open suitcase as if to protest my upcoming trip), and get ready for a trip that's as smooth as Nutella (my favorite!)!

Best,
Christine
