Yoga is NOT about fancy poses
Wellness & Yoga with Christine | MAR 9, 2024

Hi there,
I've been busy this week creating a sequence for the new gentle yoga series and preparing for corporate meetings. Moreover, I also needed to put together documents as a Trustee of the building I live in. One of my neighbors decided to sell her unit. Why did I volunteer for this role?
But creating the new yoga sequence was fun. I start with an intended benefit in mind, such as releasing tension in our lower backs. Based on my training in yoga and anatomy, I then figure out which postures work best for that and in what order. I love the creative part of coming up with a new sequence.
Some people think that yoga is all about fancy poses -- the more advanced, the better. Check out this photo of me doing Side Crow Pose.

Looks cool, right?
What you don't know is that I held this pose for about one second before I crashed to the ground. And that doing Crow Pose doesn't feel good in my body. It creates too much pressure on my hands and wrists. So I don't usually do it.
I focus my practice on simple poses. They are just as effective, if not even more so.
Why am I sharing this with you?
I don't want you to be influenced by photos showing fancy yoga poses and think that's what yoga is about (and that, therefore, yoga isn't for you).
Yoga can be as simple and effective as:
... lying on your back and focusing on belly breathing to calm your nervous system and get more oxygen into your lungs;
... lying on your back with your legs up the wall to release pressure from your legs and lower back;
... taking a few deep breaths when you're feeling triggered to allow yourself a moment to think before reacting.
Send me a snapshot of you in a simple yoga pose. I’d love to see you having fun with that!
Best,
Christine
