Want to live well? Create a set morning routine

Let me ask you: how do you start your mornings? Do you have a set routine to get your day started?

I ask because more and more research has emerged showing that having a positive morning routine can change the trajectory of your entire day. A set morning routine can help you live better.

So instead of starting your day by grabbing your phone first thing, give yourself 60 minutes, 30 minutes, or even just 15 minutes for a set morning routine before you officially start your day. A morning routine helps you set the tone for the day.

I subscribe to GrowthDay, a personal development coaching platform by Brendon Burchard. He's the author of several books on performance and achievement, including High-Performance Habits and The Motivation Manifesto.

He stresses the importance of having a morning routine and emphasizes that every successful person he coaches has a set morning routine. Here is his own 60-minute version:

When you practice a consistent morning routine, you're more prepared for the day when the unpredictable happens. It'll help you achieve your daily goals and, if you stick to it, your weekly, monthly, and annual goals.

To improve my own morning routine, I started each morning this week with a Rise & Shine live meditation webinar, alongside other yoga teachers.

As part of the meditation practice, we did Tony Robbins' 15-minute "priming exercise". It's a combination of an energizing breathing exercise + visual meditation + gratitude practice + goal celebration.

The first time I did it, it felt a bit strange. But I did feel more energized, grateful, and empowered afterward. After doing it multiple days in a row, I felt calmer throughout the day and everyday annoyances bothered me less. Not bad for a 15-minute exercise we can do anywhere.

Whether you are a fan of Tony Robbins or not, I invite you to give his priming exercise a try. Experiment with starting every day for one week with this Priming Exercise and see if it makes a difference. If it does, keep on doing it. If it doesn't, drop it.
