The Olympics: Fun Facts and Wellness Bingo

Hi, did you catch the Tokyo Olympics opening ceremony yesterday?

Despite the strange circumstances surrounding this year's Olympics, let's try to get into the Olympic spirit. Here are some fun Olympic facts for you:

  • In ancient Greece, athletes (all male) competed naked. Good thing that social media didn't exist back then!

  • Tarzan competed in the Olympics: Janos Peter Weissmuller, who played Tarzan in the 1930s on the big screen, was a competitive swimmer, winning 5 gold medals in the Olympics.

  • In the early part of the 20th century, artists also participated in the Olympics to win medals in their fields: painters, sculptors, architects, writers, and musicians.

  • During the Berlin Games in 1936, two Japanese pole-vaulters tied for 2nd place. So they cut the silver and bronze medals in half and fused the two different halves together.

  • Live pigeon shooting was an Olympic event at the Paris Games in 1900. Other events that are no longer with us at the Olympics include tug of war, hot air ballooning, and dueling pistol. What will they come up with next?

Are you cut out for the Olympics? To kindle your competitive spirit, check out the Olympic Wellness Bingo I've created for you! Over the next week, try to cross off as many boxes as you can. If you want to download the bingo sheet, click here: Olympic Wellness Bingo.pdf
