How to keep your wrists safe and how to modify your yoga practice if you have bad wrists

I often hear from yoga students, especially those who are just getting started with their practice, that their wrists hurt when they do yoga. It shouldn't actually come as a big surprise. As humans, we are not used to putting weight on our hands. After all, we walk upright on our feet.

Yet there are many yoga poses that put weight on our hands: starting with basic poses such as tabletop, downward-facing dog, and plank pose, to more advanced poses, such as handstand and crow pose.

To help you protect your wrists during yoga, I created a video for you where I explain the importance of and demo the proper hand placement on the mat. I also show you wrist warmups you could do before your yoga practice. Incorporating both into your yoga practice will reduce your chance of injuring your wrists.

For those of you suffering from a previous wrist injury or recovering from an acute wrist injury, I also teach you modifications for common yoga poses. Those modifications put much less stress on your wrists. I hope you give them a try.

Throughout your yoga practice, it is important that you listen to your body. Don't do a pose if it hurts. Make modifications to fit your body's needs. Don't worry what the other students will think. This is your own practice, so do what feels right in your body! I remind my students of this in every one of my yoga classes.
